The Final Frontier
The side of the massive freighter blew open, a squad of seven large armoured lizards poured into the starship’s halls, opening fire upon every living being they saw. The lizards tore through the human soldiers, blood splattering the walls. In a desperate attempt to defend themselves, the humans opened fire on the intruders, their laser bolts glancing off the thick alien armour.
“Retreat!!” shouted a commanding officer, “We can’t stop them!!”
The humans backed up farther into their ship, pulling away from the unstoppable enemy. Blast marks from both sides spoiled the purity of the white chrome walls, blood splashed across the floors. Alien lizards stormed across the bodies of their foes, destroying everything in their path with brutal ferocity. Suddenly, a large projectile erupted through the smoke, ripping into the crowd of aliens. The bullet tore apart their armour with its explosion, leaving their reptilian skin open. A thick smoke filled the hallway, spreading chaos and fear throughout all the troops, both human and alien alike. From within the cloak, cries of agony and pain went up, the coarseness of the voices signified their alien origin.
“What’s going on?!”
“Someone get the ventilation systems online!”
“Find out what’s happening!!”
Cries from the human militia were thrown across the room, barking orders and asking frantic questions. Pretty soon, the ventilation system was back online, pumping the smoke out of the hallways. As it cleared, the bodies of the reptilian aliens lay about the corridor, their skin and armour destroyed by clean cuts and wounds. Standing amidst the fresh bodies was a thin but well-built young man. He was wearing a navy blue and black uniform. In his hand was a straight bladed ninja sword dripping with purple hued blood, clearly the essence of the beasts soaking his blade. Around his head sat a turquoise bubble, a barrier against the vacuum of space.
“Paean,” He said in a commanding voice. “Seal the hole back up.”
A girl in identical armour stepped out from a corner, a similar blue-green bubble around her head.
“Aye aye Vanguard!” She flipped open a scroll that she was carrying on her back, spilling paint on it with a brush. “Avasta Kira Forae!”
A large turquoise barrier formed in the hole in the wall, solidifying into a glass-like window. With that problem solved, Paean took down the bubble helmets from her and Vanguard’s heads.
“First we find ourselves in a war against a cyborg Nazi commander with futuristic tanks, then, we land in an intergalactic battle against space lizards. How much weirder can Wonderland get?” Van asked as he cleaned his sword.
“Well, there are a lot of your friends we need to save. So, the diversity of the worlds will be as great. Meaning, the worlds may just get weirder.”
I wonder who we’ll find here… He thought to himself.
As he sheathed his sword, a large muscular man strode towards him. The man was of African heritage, having three long scars dug into his face, more than likely caused by one of the aliens. In his thick armour, and with the large laser cannon in his hands, he was quite the intimidating sight.
“Greetings…stowaways.” He said in a menacingly deep voice. “How you got on my ship is in question, but, however you did, I am glad you are here. Your valour just now was very impressive. I’ve never seen anyone take on the Tuatarians with such bravery.” The man turned back around to them, “I’m Captain Earhart Jr. Please, join our side. We need more soldiers like you two.”
“Wait…why are you fighting them? Can’t you just talk it out??” The ever-benevolent Paean asked.
“Well. This galaxy is under control of the Galactic Council. The Tuatarians were a part of this, as well as the humans. But, they were a violent group, causing many fights to break out in the meetings. For this crime against peace, they were excused from the Council. Since then, they’ve caused whatever trouble they could, their latest threats being the attacks on peaceful trade vessels that make their way out here. The Council sent me and my crew out here to quell these attacks.”
“What’s our place in this conflict?” Vanguard asked.
“I want you to join us. Your skill in battle is invaluable. We need more soldiers like you. So, will you join our cause?”
Paean looked to Van, who nodded.
“For now, yes sir. We’ll stay with the fight until we find our friend.”
“Your friend is on this ship? Who? Are they a soldier of mine?”
“Honestly sir.” Van chuckled as he said it, “We have no clue.”
